The adjustment mechanism, for beds and mattresses and seats and the like, has beams (16) on both sides and supports across the adjustment direction which together form a support plane. At least one operating system sets the angle of the support plane through a setting lever (14). The swing setting lever works with a number of separate beam links (16A-16D) for the side beams of the mattress/seat support surface. The beams have a housing structure with two beam sides (16',16) to shroud the setting lever between them, which has projections (18B) to act on the beam links.
