A method for fitting steps into a vertical shaft supported by circular shaft liners has recesses (1) or protuberances in the shaft walls to provide a clip fitting for the plastic moulded steps (T). The steps have holes on the upper edge to clip over grips (A1) on the shaft walls and swing into position about the grips. The step setting is secured by clip fastening grips (A2) which secure into the lower part of the steps. The steps can be fitted and removed by a simple twist and clip action and can be directly fitted by hand or via a long handled fitting tool.
