To clean a filter (10) which has been used with a soiled fluid flow through it, a cleaning fluid is directed at it in a counterflow to detach clinging matter from the outer surfaces. The soiled liquid passes into the interior (11) of the sleeve-shaped filter from outside. A cleaning unit (20) is inserted axially into the filter interior, with diametrically opposed jets (21, 22) which are rotated (31) at the same time as they are moved axially (30) into the filter. The high pressure jet streams (23, 24) are directed at the inner wall, to pass through the filter and detach any external dirt adhering to the outer surfaces.
