A safety grid for fitting across a water course, to prevent persons being washed into the water course, has a fixed upper section (1) and a hinged lower panel (3). The lower panel is fitted with a buoyancy aid comprising a plastic tube sealed at each end and secured by metal straps and threaded fasteners. If the water level rises the buoyancy lifts the lower panels and allows silt and debris to wash under the barrier.
