The thermal treatment plant (1) uses hot gas from a burner (11) moving in counter-flow to the movement of solid material from the upper end of the rotary kiln (3) to the lower end. The burner may be fired by gas or oil and may heat the material to between 450 and 550 degrees C. The solid material may be introduced into the kiln by a screw feeder (5). Gas is taken away by a flue (7). Dust may be removed from the gas and may be returned to the kiln via a pipe (13) leading to a spiral pipe (53) and an annular space (19') in the wall of the kiln. There are further passages (55) and a further annular space (19'') with gas outlets (39) into the interior of the kiln. Treated material is discharged (9) under the burner.
