The swirl device may be used in the inlet manifold of an internal combustion engine running on liquid fuel and consists of a thin strap of e.g. plastics material. The strap is rolled up to form a cylinder and placed in a passage in the inlet manifold. One side of the strap has several evenly-spaced curved slits (1), defining tongues (2). The tongues are bent inward about diagonal lines a through an angle (Winkel alpha) to the base of the cylinder. The angle may be between 30 and 70 degrees.
