The staple of wire material for use in stapling appliances comprises a cross piece (10) and two legs (14) bent over at right angles to the cross piece. The legs of the staple have a design yield point (16) at a defined distance from the bend point (12) between the cross piece and the legs, with this distance corresponding to two to twenty times the sheet thickness of the material to be stapled. The legs of the staple may have a design break point in the region of the bend points.
