A composting assembly is installed within a heat-insulated mobile container having standard dimensions and is charged from time to time with organic residues. The container is set up at sites for which local authority permission is given. The container has two composting chambers. Organic residues are introduced via an air-seal hatch. Alternatively, residues are introduced following processing in an associated sorting assembly which removes metal objects and pre-shreds organic resides. Alternatively, the full container is transported to the operator's own site, or the composting process takes place at the point of refuse origin e.g. farm or park. The container has a 380V/16 Ah electrical supply and is monitored and operated by remote radio control by a personal computer at the operator's site. The computer logs all relevant parameters and regulates the high temperature phase.
