A filter for the purification of combustion engine exhaust gases has a fluted membrane, supported on both sides by a support matrix, e.g. loose fibers, which completely fill the membrane corrugations and free volume of the housing. The membrane may be formed from open-cell foam or fine fibers, and has a porosity of 70-85%, and a thickness of 0.2-2.0 mm.
