A snow chain system for a road vehicle has a main chain (30) fitted to the inside of a wheel by clip fasteners (31) to link the free ends of the chain. A number of grip chains (21) are strung between the main chain and brackets (12) which are curved to fit the side contour of the wheel. Each curved bracket is connected to three grip chains and to a wedge shaped connecting bracket (13) whose apexes (14) are linked by adjustable tensioners to secure the chain. The outer ends of the curved brackets are linked by short chains and by clip fastening hooks.
