The two-stroke internal combustion engine (1) has a piston with a hollow piston rod containing the stem of large inlet valve coaxial with the piston. A spring at the bottom lifts the valve when the piston is near bottom dead center. The outlet valves at the top of the cylinder are actuated by a camshaft in the usual way. The hollow piston rod is rigidly attached to the piston and passes through a gland in a plate closing the lower end of the cylinder. As the piston rises in the cylinder, mixture is drawn into the space under the cylinder through an inlet valve in the plate (2). As the piston descends, the valve closes and the mixture is compressed and can flow through the piston valve near bottom dead center. The piston rod is connected to the crank via a crosshead (7) and a connecting rod.
