The running surface of a part of an internal combustion engine, especially a cylinder liner, has a friction reducing coating with a thickness of especially less than 20 microns. The coating is applied to the running surface which is finished by honing. The running surface consists of a ferrous material with a honed finish, whereby the coating is deposited from a gaseous phase. The coating is selected from the DLC, WC/C and NFC group.
