A mass filter has electrodes (3) to which alternating current (AC) or radio frequency (RF) voltage is applied, and one or more transient direct current (DC) voltage is progressively applied with respect to end electrodes (2a,2b), so that ions having low mass to charge ratio is ejected while ions having high mass to charge to ratio is trapped in the mass filter. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) mass filter; (2) method of mass spectrometry; and (3) method of mass to charge ratio separation.
