Double ended cutting insert (1) has central insert body (2) with cutting end (3a,3b) comprising front cutting edge (7) formed at an intersection of upper rake surface (4), front (5) and side (6) relief flanks, the front relief flank consisting of upper relief flank (5a) intermediate (5c) and lower abutment (5b) surfaces where the lower abutment is insert with respect to the upper relief flank face which is normal to the centre line of the insert. The cutting edge and the upper relief flank face are inclined to the inset centre line by a leading angle (alpha).
