Control apparatus (2) has inductance (10), a switch mechanism (12) and a spacer (4, 6). The spacer holds the inductance at a defined distance from a test object (8). The inductance is variable by actuating the switch mechanism (12), which may be e.g. a push button or a key. In use, the control apparatus is placed near the detector, at a defined distance. The inductance is increased and it is determined whether the detector outputs a signal. An independent claim is also included for a method for testing a detector.
