The coding method uses a coding device (3) associated with one connector half (1) and an electronic circuit (9) associated with the other connector half (2). The electronic circuit provides a signal (S1) fed to the first connector half when the connector is assembled, for provision of a signal (S2) by the coding device, evaluated by the electronic circuit for providing an output signal (S3) identifying the assembled connector halves.. An independent claim for an electrical plug-in connector is also included.
