In the process for the preparation of an adsorbent which is capable of effectively removing substances which emit an odour, and in particular foul-smelling substances, the adsorbent is obtained by exposing an organic compound of high molecular weight, such as, for example, polyolefinic polymers or halogenated polyolefinic polymers, to ionising radiation, and then graft-polymerising the compound of high molecular weight with a polymerisable monomer containing ion exchange groups, and/or with a polymerisable monomer which can be converted into ion exchange groups, in order to incorporate the ion exchange groups into the compound of high molecular weight.
