A composition comprising oligomeric and/or polymeric polyols such as of glycerol which is useful in the production of emulsifying agents and surfactants is provided by a process wherein the polyol or oligomers hereof is heated in the presence of NaAlO₂ as a catalyst. The process results in end products having improved colour characteristics and the catalyst has an enhancing effect on the reaction rate allowing shorter reaction times and lower reaction temperatures.
