The device comprises computing means (62-65) for carrying out operations on n-tuples. An n-tuple defines an envelope of one variable over a time interval. An input memory (4) receives measurement blocks, for carrying out measurements at known points of the network and converts (42) them into initial n-tuples. In a base memory (5), a functional model comprises a component list (Lv), and the designation (Df, Dg) of at least one particular function of the measurements (Lp). Management means (6) will, repeatedly, (a) match (60, 61) available initial n-tuples, and at least one model applicable to them, (b) obtain, by calculation on n-tuples (62-65), with the function designation (Df, Dg) of the model and these n-tuples, at least one resulting n-tuple (Nf, Ng), (c) apply the resulting n-tuple (Nf, Ng) to means (66) for testing a standard expression, and (d) associate the testing means output with the components list (Lv) of the model. A decision logic analyses different testing means outputs so as to identify one or more defective components.
