A process for the preparation of a colored, in particular a reddish orange, object based on zirconium oxide, as well as prepared by this process of colored decorative article

An orange-to-red colored zirconia article is made by sintering and annealing a molded granulated powder mixture of zirconia, stabilizer, glass-former and copper (II) oxide. An orange/red colored zirconia article is made by (a) mixing zirconia powder with (by wt.) 3-20% yttrium, magnesium, cerium or calcium oxide stabilizer, 0.1-5% silicon, aluminum and yttrium oxide glass-forming powders and 0.01-10% copper (II) oxide; (b) mixing the mixture with a binder and then granulating; (c) molding and then sintering in air at 1350-1500 degrees C for ≥ 30 min.; (d) annealing the article at 700-1350 degrees C for 0.5-20 hr. in an inert or reducing atmosphere having an oxygen partial pressure of 10-10-1 atmospheres; and (e) polishing. An Independent claim is also included for a decorative orange/red zirconia article made by the above process.
