Method and device for indexing and search for images bases on the contents of the regions of interest

Indexing method for digital images (lm), in which in a preceding step at least one region of interest (Rilm) within the image is defined. The method has the following steps: generation (E306-E314) of a data index (H(Rilm) representative of the visual contents of the region of interest; creation (E316) of an index (IDX(lm)) associated with the given image, the index image being composed of a vector having as many components as there are images of interest defined for the image with each component having a corresponding data index. Independent claims are also made for a method for searching for a digital image amongst an image database, where the images are indexed according to the above method and a device and computer system for searching for images based on the above method. Image retrieval is based on calculation of a similarity value that is representative of the degree of similarity between retrieved image and the example image used for searching.
