Oxygen torch cutting procedure involves making a trial cut of a model of the component in an area away from the hostile zone in which the cut is to be made, measuring the speed of the torch's advance, its distance from the component and feed pressures of oxygen and fuel gas, before making the actual cut in the hostile zone by remote control. Oxygen torch (18) cutting procedure, e.g. for cutting away sections of a component, such as a heat barrier (4) in a nuclear reactor vessel, involves determining the parameters of the operation by making a trial cut of a model of the component in an area away from the hostile zone, measuring the speed of the torch's advance, its distance from the component and feed pressures of oxygen and fuel gas, before making the actual cut in the hostile zone by remote control. The remote cutting system uses an anthropomorphic manipulator arm (14) on a support (13), and moving along a predetermined trajectory.
