The tool, for use e.g. on a crane or gantry, consists of a rigid body (12) with an inner cavity (18) to receive a metal profile (1) such as a length of rail. The lower part of the body has an opening (20) giving access to the cavity, and its sides have one or more hooks (30) that can move between open and closed positions in which the profile can pass through the cavity opening and be locked inside it respectively. The movement of the hooks is controlled by closed (34) and open-ended (36) slots on the hooks interacting with studs (26, 28) on the tool body as thrust surfaces (40, 42) on the tips (38) of the hooks interact with the surfaces of the profile.
