The safety system consists of two strips (1) of a synthetic fabric or supple metal that are connected to the top and bottom of the lift cage and extend for the whole height of the lift shaft, less the section covered by the cage. At the top and bottom of the shaft the two strips are wound onto rollers, winding on and off automatically as the lift cage moves up and down the shaft. The strips are in vidid colours, fluorescent or phosphorescent and can be fitted with contacts that stop the lift and set off a sound or light alarm in an emergency when touched. The rollers can be turned by a spring mechanism, electric drive, or a belt or chain transmission connecting them.
