A test rig (6) consists of ball joint (9) and jaws (7,8) actuated by a press (4,5). The jaws grasp the ends of a standard specimen (1) which are also secured to two cylindrical members which partly overlap at separating ball races. The cylindrical members give longitudinal and rotational guidance and are fitted with peripheral jacks or equivalent means able to impart relative rotation during tension/compression tests.
