Ceramides or pseudoceramides are used in cosmetic or dermatological compositions for preventing, retarding or treating the effects of collagenases. Independent claims are also included for: (1) N-alkyl N-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl) dihydroxyalkanoamides of formula Me(CH2)mCH(OH)CH(OH)-(CH2)nC(O)N[(CH2)p)Me]CH2CH(OH)CH2OH (I); (2) preparation of (I); (3) composition comprising at least one compound (I) in a cosmetically or dermatologically acceptable carrier; (4) cosmetic treatment of the skin, hair, nails or eyelashes by application of at least one compound (I); (5) use of (I) to prepare a dermatological composition for preventing, retarding or treating the effects of elastase, for restructuring the lipid barrier or for preventing, retarding or treating the effects of skin aging, loss of skin elasticity, wrinkles and/or dermal atrophy. m : 2-14; n : 3-15; and p : 7-25.
