A pollution control unit (10) has a body formed at least partly by a cylindrical housing (12) and has at least two orifices (16, 18) acting as an inlet and outlet for exhaust gases from an engine. At least one of the orifices (18) is a lateral orifice and is bounded at least partially by a transverse cover (50) across the end of the housing. The lateral orifice (18) has an external collar (40) for connecting to an exhaust pipe. Depending on the position of the orifice part of the collar can be formed by the edge of the transverse cover.
