Process for detecting and identifying bacteria present in a complex mixture or in water by simultaneous but spatially separated, multiplex amplification of target nucleic acids (I). Process for detecting and identifying bacteria present in a complex mixture or in water by multiplex amplification, simultaneous but spatially separated, of target nucleic acids (I) comprises: (1) contacting the sample of (I) with at least 2 pairs of primers for amplification, each pair being specific and exclusive for (I) of a bacterial species, genus or group; (2) amplification of (I); and (3) detecting and identifying bacteria in the mixture. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) similar process that includes quantification of the bacteria, where amplification is by real-time PCR; (2) eleven primer pairs (sequences defined in the specification) for the process; (3) eleven sets of primer pairs and a probe (sequences defined in the specification) for the process; (4) probes for the process, specific and exclusive for a bacterial species, genus or group, that are complementary to amplification products generated by primers of (2); (5) kit for determining, identifying and optionally quantifying bacterial nucleic acid that contains at least 2 each of the new primer pairs and new probes; and (6) nucleic acid microarray or chip for identifying bacteria by the new process.
