Mammography unit in which the compression cushion is automatically detected. Accordingly, a rear face of the cushion is equipped with identification and position markers which can be detected by sensors (302-305) attached to a moving carriage (105) of the mammography unit. The markers read in by the detectors can be converted to binary words which allow automatic parameterization of the unit and automatic association of images with the read keys, e.g. the name of the patient.
