The instrument to take a sample from the surface of skin or integuments in vivo, for analysis, has an abrasive scraper (4) with at least one cavity (8) to receive the detached matter. A drive (7) rotates the scraper against the surface, and a spring mechanism (6,15) sets the pressure applied by the scraper. The abrasive scraper is a ceramic disk with a diameter of 0.5-50.0 mm, which can withstand temperatures of at least 200 degrees Centigrade and especially at least 400 degrees Centigrade, and pressures of at least 20 bar and preferably at least 50 bar. The abrasive disk together with the collected sample material is dispatched for analysis.
