The assembly aims to enlarge the production range of an installation for the cold rolling of metal strip, incorporating at least two rolling cages (11, 12) operating in tandem and allowing, with regard to the product characteristics, the realisation of a certain thickness reduction rate in a determined production range. At least one (11) of the rolling cages is equipped with a means of transformation allowing the cage to be changed from a quarto configuration to a sexto configuration and inversely, whilst conserving the same means for applying the rolling forces. The configuration of the transformable rolling cage is chosen as a function of the characteristics of the product being rolled, in a manner to realise the rolling of products with a diverse range of characteristics, the production range being thus enlarged. An Independent claim is also included for a rolling mill installation for putting this method of enlarging the production range into service.
