Stable Hamamelis extracts, obtained by extraction with hot water and concentration, useful as pharmaceutical or cosmetic agents, having e.g. antiinflammatory, wound healing and hemostatic action

Production of a Hamamelis extract (I) involves: (a) cutting Hamamelis plant material into small fragments; (b) macerating 0.25-4 parts weight of the fragments in 11 parts of purified water for 4-24 hours; (c) heating the mixture to boiling and concentrating to an amount of 1 part based on the volume of water originally used; and (d) after cooling, adding a solubilizing and stabilizing agent to the concentrate in a sufficient amount to give a clear extract. An Independent claim is included for the extracts (I) obtained by the process, containing compounds soluble in boiling water (e.g. tannins and polyphenols).
