The device has a ground sensor (S) to measure the relative speed of a vehicle (V) with respect to the ground. Initial speed value supplied by a component (e.g. pulse generator (G) mounted on a gear box), with regard to the speed of rotation of the wheels of the vehicle, is corrected using a correction coefficient. A calculator determines the correction coefficient by comparing values of speed provided by the component and sensor at a given instant.
