The risk of fire or explosion in a filter used for separating dust particles from gases can be prevented by using a mist generator (5) with tubes (51, 52) that deliver water under pressure and compressed air respectively to nozzles (53) that can create a mist inside the filter when required. The production of the mist is controlled by at least one solenoid valve connected to a spark and/or smoke detector. The tubes are made from a moisture resistant material, such as stainless steel, and can be connected to existing water and compressed air circuits.
