The process involves calculating parameters of encoding in accordance with attribute values associated with multimedia documents e.g. audio, video and audiovisual documents and pre-stored values in a multimedia apparatus. The pre-stored value in the apparatus corresponds to the preferences of a user. The documents are encoded in accordance with the calculated values and are stored in the apparatus. The audio, video and audiovisual documents received by the apparatus are decoded prior to the coding step, according to attributes of original coding to form an intermediate format that is susceptible to be coded with the encoding parameters. An independent claim is also included for an encoding apparatus.
