The mechanism has a front unit with a rear part articulated with a front part of a back unit around a transversal axis (5). The back unit is articulated with a chassis of a vehicle around another transversal axis (6). A sprocket (8) is mounted on the former transversal axis. Driving units move a steering rack (14) in response to pivoting of the back unit around the latter transversal axis. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle having a retractable rigid roof.
