The fuel cell assembly comprises at least one basic cell (3) with a first zone (5) functioning as a fuel cell and a second zone (7) functioning as a water electrolyzer. The zones share a common electrolyte (9), and are separated by an electric isolation device (19) so as to electrically isolate the first zone from the second zone (7). Oxygen and hydrogen produced in the second zone are routed towards the first zone.
