PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily and efficiently remove defects scattered in a steel strip passed at a high speed, and to surely grind a defect section while absorbing conveyance level fluctuation.;SOLUTION: This on-line defect removing device comprises defect detecting devices 12a, 12b detecting defects that occur in the surface of the steel strip, and grinding devices 14a, 14b grinding defects based on the detected defect detection information including a defect position in the width direction of the strip. These grinding devices comprises a traverse mechanism 20 with a plurality of traversing frames 25L, 25H traversing in a width direction moving range previously allotted in the width direction of the steel strip 1a, forward and reverse travel driving mechanisms 30L, 30H fitted to the traversing frames while having forward and reverse travel driving cylinders 31 making grinding heads 33 travel forward and in reverse following to the conveyance level change of the steel strip, and grinding tools 35 fitted to the grinding heads respectively. The defects of the steel strip are removed by using the traverse of the traversing frames corresponding to the defect position in the width direction of the steel strip and the corresponding grinding tools of the grinding heads travelling forward and in reverse of the forward and reverse travel driving cylinders.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
