PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a degradation retarder for biodegradable material that can suppress the biodegradation of biodegradable material and retards their deterioration and can quickly be biodegraded after the material has been used ordinarily for a prescribed term so that the material may not remain in the environment.;SOLUTION: This degradation retarder mainly comprises at least one selected from complex salts obtained from chitosan and a metal selected from copper, zinc, silver, iron, nickel and molybdenum and their weak alkaline chitosan metal complexes prepared by treating them with alkali.
