PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lightweight high strength valve lifter made of titanium alloy having excellent sliding characteristics for an engine.;SOLUTION: The valve lifter 16 includes a cylindrical part 19 and an end wall shape part 20, and includes a valve lifter main body 21 made of titanium alloy, a first hardened layer 23 formed on an outer surface of the end wall shape part 20 to form a sliding surface sliding on a valve gear cam, and a second hardened layer 25 formed on an outer circumference surface of the cylindrical part 19 to form a sliding surface sliding in a guiding hole of an engine main body.
