PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-scattering type liquid crystal device which has high degree of whiteness, low drive voltage and high memory properties.;SOLUTION: The light-scattering type liquid crystal device is constructed by interposing a light-controlling layer, composed of a polymer matrix and a liquid crystal composition between two sheets of substrates which have transparent electrode layers, of which at least one is transparent and which retain a uniform distance in a state of having the transparent electrode layers placed opposite to each other; carries out an operation of writing an image in the light-controlling layer by applying a voltage to the transparent electrode layers so as to make the image displayed on the light-controlling layer and remain intact; cooling the liquid crystal device so as to solidify orientation of liquid crystal molecules and stopping voltage application, while retaining the state and carries out an operation of erasing the image on the light-controlling layer by heating the liquid crystal device so as to release the fixed orientation of the liquid crystal molecules.
