PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for deciding the position of a recording head, using an existing data structure on a magnetic storage medium.;SOLUTION: In one example, a recording head 100 writes data in an operated track on a magnetic storage tape. This recording head includes an existing write element and an existing read element 32 which have a spacial relationship. The read element is constructed to access at least a part of a reference track, when the writing element accesses the active track. A controller decides the position of a transducer relative to the reference track, and respositions the recording head to write data in the active track. The read element 32 is used as the dedicated read element of the recording head or a reverse-direction channel reader for reading the reference track during reading and/or writing.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
