PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dot area discrimination apparatus and a dot area discrimination method which have high accuracy. PSOLUTION: The dot area discrimination apparatus 10 is provided with; a first edge detection part 1 which refers to an area of image data to detect a leading edge and a trailing edge in a first direction; a second edge detection part 2 which refers to the area to detect a leading edge and a trailing edge in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction; and a dot feature detection part 3 which refers to edges detected by the first and second edge detection means 1 and 2 in a prescribed area to judge symmetry of leading and trailing edges in the first direction within the prescribed reference area and symmetry of leading and trailing edge in the second direction and detects a pixel having dot features on the basis of judged symmetry.
