PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new face image candidate area retrieval method, retrieval system and retrieval program, capable of accurately retrieving an area having strong possibility of presence of a person's face image from the inside of an image at high speed.;SOLUTION: Each prescribed area is sequentially selected inside the retrieval target image G to produce an image characteristic vector of the selection area, the image characteristic vector is inputted to a support vector machine 30 which has already learned the image characteristic vectors of a plurality of learning sample images, and it is decided whether the face image is present in the selection area or not, according to positional relation to an identification hyperplane. Therefore, the area having the strong possibility of the presence of the person's face image can be retrieved from the inside of the retrieval target image G at high speed with high accuracy.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
