PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new aqueous dispersion of a polyurethane having a long side chain and a heat sensitive recording material which has good adhesion to a substrate and high heat resistance, is free from the problems of poor printing and ink migration and has a back layer not causing seizure to the thermal head.;SOLUTION: The aqueous dispersion of a long side chain-containing polyurethane is a dispersion or an emulsion in an aqueous medium of a hydrophilic polyurethane having a long side chain obtained by reacting, in the presence or absence of a chain extender, a polyisocyanate with (A) a compound having both at least one hydrophilic group other than a hydroxy group and at least one active hydrogen-containing group, (B) a long chain alkyl group-containing compound having an 8-64C alkyl group and at least one active hydrogen-containing group in the side chain and (C) a polysiloxane compound having at least one active hydrogen-containing group.
