PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely perform accurate detection of fuel injection quantity deterioration in an internal combustion engine carrying out low temperature combustion or the like.;SOLUTION: The diesel engine carrying out the low temperature combustion is constructed so that when fuel injection quantity reduction is detected, the low temperature combustion is prohibited (S116), fuel addition and after-injection is prohibited (S118) to carry out normal combustion. The engine eliminates combustive variable factors other than shift of a fuel injection quantity, and consequently allows the accurate detection of fuel injection quantity deterioration to be surely performed even when there is almost no repetition other than the low temperature combustion.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
