PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cermet-made cutting tool with a hard coating layer exerting excellent chipping resistance under high-speed deep cutting conditions.;SOLUTION: The surface coated cermet made cutting tool is formed by executing physical vapor deposition of the hard coating layer with 1-15 μm in average layer thickness on the surface of a cermet base body. The hard coating layer has a structure in which a CrN phase is dispersed to a substrate composed of (Ti-Al, Si)N at a ratio of 0.3-10 area % in cross section analysis using an Auger spectroscopic analyzer. The substrate composed of (Ti-Al, Si)N has a distribution structure of component concentration in which the maximum content point of Al and the minimum content point of Al alternately and repeatedly exist along in the layer thickness direction at prescribed intervals and a content rate of Al and that of Ti from the maximum content point of Al to the minimum content point of Al and from the minimum content point of Al to the maximum content point of Al continuously fluctuate. The maximum content point of the Al component satisfies a special composition formula. The interval between the adjacent maximum content point of Al and minimum content point of Al is 0.01-0.1 μm.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
