PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for determining a capacity limiting electrode of a lead battery, capable of determining if it is a positive electrode or negative electrode that limits the capacity of the lead battery. PSOLUTION: A current rectangular pulse is applied in the middle of charging a lead battery. The resulting transition of change in rising gradient (dVa/dt) of the battery voltage wave and transition of change in trailing gradient (dVb/dt) are plotted in a graph with the gradient as vertical axis and amount of electricity as horizontal axis to obtain a peak point in the rising gradient, and a bottom point in the trailing gradient. Positions where the peak point and the bottom point are produced on the horizontal axis in the graph are obtained. If the peak point appears later than the bottom point, the negative electrode is determined to be deteriorated, and if the peak point appears faster than the bottom point, the positive electrode is determined to be deteriorated.
