PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining a rotational reference position generally applicable to plane of polarization keeping optical fibers, and to provide an optical fiber fusion-splicing machine using this method.;SOLUTION: The invention relates to the method for determining the rotational reference position of a plane of polarization keeping optical fiber which adopts rotational positions in which the special waveforms A, B produced on both sides of a waveform become approximately symmetrical to the optical axis as the reference positions in the positioning about the optical axis of the plane of polarization keeping optical fiber, in a light intensity distribution waveform observed approximately centering the optical axis of the plane of polarization keeping optical fiber by rotating the plane of polarization keeping optical fiber about the optical axis, making the light incident to the side face of the plane of polarization keeping optical fiber and receiving the light transmitted through a lens, and obtaining for each rotational position the light intensity distribution of the received light centering the optical axis in the plane of polarization keeping optical fiber, and the invention relates to the optical fiber fusion-splicing machine using the method for determining the rotational reference position.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
