PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tool for friction stir welding, which leaves no trace of welding, causes no excessive weight increase, joins a surface in beautiful condition, and avoids joining cost increase, even when materials to be welded have curved surfaces and must be joined together at the curved surfaces with friction stir welding, and to provide a backing plate for friction stir welding and a friction stir welding method.;SOLUTION: The tool for friction-stir welding comprises a main unit 1 which is cylindrical and supported by a rotary drive device, a shoulder part 4 provided at the tip of the main unit 1, and a pin 2 provided in the center of the shoulder part 4. The shoulder part 4 has a hemispherical convex surface which is curved.
